Samantha Clayton is a performer, vocalist and the bandleader of “Brilliant Corners - a Toronto based jazz ensemble. Samantha is a singer well known for her vocal renditions (with original lyrics) of the Thelonious Monk songbook.
The use of wide intervals, dissonant harmonies, and rhythmic displacement in the Monk vernacular, readily strike fear into the hearts of accomplished instrumentalists they pose even more danger to vocalists, yet Samantha and her group take on the challenge with a selection of his lesser known compositions: “Light Blue, “Think of One”, and “Epistrophy”.
Borrowing from both the classic American Songbook and the vast repertoires of various esteemed songwriters (Joni Mitchell, Duke Ellington, Bob Marley, Charles Mingus, and The Grateful Dead), Samantha Clayton and Brilliant Corners continue to engage and surprise their audience with fresh arrangements and unconventional song choices.
